PLANT TISSUE CULTURE IS FINALLY IN SOMALILAND

By Kenneth tembe

IGAD Sheikh Technical of Veterinary School (ISTVS) in partnership with the University of Nairobi and World Vision Somalia recently launched a newly constructed and well equipped tissue culture laboratory at ISTVS. The lab, first of its kind in Somaliland will unlock the potential of dryland farming through rapid multiplication of seedlings. Previously, farmers have used conventional methods to propagate fruit trees and other indigenous tree. However, these methods take longer and often with little success.

Plant tissue culture is a modern technology used in the multiplication of planting materials. The techniques is carried out in well-established laboratory under aseptic condition and saves on both time and space. Clean and high yielding plants parts are carefully selected and used to propagate vigorous seedlings for transplanting.

Staff and students at ISTVS had the opportunity to be trained on tissue culture technology by a team from the University of Nairobi. This will ensure sustainability of the lab and subsequent capacity building of the local communities. The ISTVS administration wishes to thank the University of Nairobi and World Vision Somalia for their continued engagement and support to the institution.
