AGRIPRENEURSHIP ALLIANCE AWARDS THE THIRD COHORT

A total of 19 students at IGAD Sheikh Technical University of Science (ISTUS) had a privilege to undertake an Agripreneurship course in business plan write up. The ten weeks training funded by the Agripreneurship Alliance, a Swedish non-governmental organization was conducted in ISTUS between November 2019 and January 2021. The students who teamed up in two groups, Hanano goat fattening and Bushra onion submitted their business plans to The Agripreneurship Alliance for a grant competition. Other universities from Kenya and Uganda also participated in the competition.

Both Hanano goat fattening and Bushra onion were successfully awarded a grant of USD 1000 startup capital. On 25th November 2021, the participants were presented with their cash price and certificates. The event which took place at the reference center was presided over by the University Vice Chancellor Dr. Fred Wesonga.

“We thank the Agripreneurpship Alliance for their continued support and collaboration towards enhancing capacity among our students.” Said Dr. Fred Wesonga, the Vice chancellor IGAD Sheikh Technical University of sciences.

Hanano goat fattening and Bushra onion groups are in the process of implementing their business ideas with the aim of addressing the gaps identified during their market research. To ensure sustainability of their business, the groups will seek for technical advice from the university staff.

“What I have learnt from the training is the importance having a diversity of skills outside university life, and The Agripreneurship Alliance has just granted us that opportunity.”  Said Ibrahim, the chairperson of Hanano goat fatteining group.
